As much as I enjoy the outing, after a few years it does tend to get a bit "been there, seen that" and finding new and better ways to tell the story becomes challenging.

Every year, the weekend after the Renaissance Festival, the Galveston Historical Society puts on a Victorian-themed Soiree. Once in a while I go down there to decompress. It's lots of people in period costumes, a little bit of stuff for sale, and a big parade.

I grew up around what are now called "vintage" sports race cars. (We just called them sports cars. And yeah, we raced them. Sometimes legally.) I took a break for many years after college, due to lack of money, time, and a car, and having learned that while I had the nerve to drive competitively, and the wish, I didn't have the reflexes. I had the opportunity to drop by Texas World Speedway and say hello again to Dad's old project restoration car, so I did... and I got sort of hooked in again. I don't want to drive now, but it's still fun to be around the cars I remember and people who love the sport the way I do.

Sikh Temple Remembrance Gathering

Sikh Temple Remembrance Gathering

Houston has a significant community of Sikhs, devotees of an Indian monotheistic path developed in the 15th Century. In August of 2012, a White Supremacist Neo-Nazi in Wisconsin shot and killed 6 Sikhs while they were preparing for a communal meal at their temple. Houston Mayor Annise Parker and members of her administration put together an interfaith candlelight vigil a few days later and many members of the community, Sikhs and nonSikhs alike, turned out.

"Better Block" is a pilot project designed to create a "Complete Streets" environment where streets become legitimate public spaces, designed for use by pedestrians, cyclists, mass transit, and private powered transport. The idea, as I understand it, is to encourage residents to consider other possible ways to design cities and neighborhoods to reduce the need for long-distance travel, saving energy and time and creating a sense of shared space. In May of 2012, a section of Washington Avenue in Houston became a Better Block for an afternoon. It was... interesting.
